Ambassador Valeriy Chaly met with U.S. Senator Robert Portman

Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States of America Valeriy Chaly met with U.S. Senator Robert Portman, who is also a co-Chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus.

Ambassador Chaly thanked Senator Portman for his steadfast support of Ukraine, particularly for promoting important initiatives that became part of the National Defense Authorization Act, 2018 signed by U.S. President, such as an authorization for provision to Ukraine of lethal weapons of a defensive nature as well as assistance to bolster Ukraine’s naval capabilities including air and coastal defense radars, naval mine and counter-mine capabilities, and littoral and coastal defense craft.

The Ambassador and Senator discussed priorities of the current Congressional Ukraine-related agenda. Particular focus was placed on the efforts to pass in the current 115th Congress a resolution dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide of 1932-1933 (Holodomor).

Ambassador Chaly also briefed the Senator on the current political situation in Ukraine and the implementation of reforms, as well as on the “Law on the Peculiarities of the State Policy in Ensuring the State Sovereignty of Ukraine over the Temporarily Occupied territories in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts” and privatization law passed by Ukraine’s Parliament.
