Unarmed protesters on Maidan used construction helmets, first plastic and later metal, to attempt to protect themselves from the violent attacks of Berkut special forces. These simple metal and plastic helmets were worn by activists of the Third Sotnya during the Revolution of Dignity on Maidan. After the mass shootings at the end of February 2014, the artists who were also members of the Third Sotnya hand-painted these helmets with different scenes and events depicting the Maidan Revolution. Some helmets are also painted with images of different Ukrainian symbols (like poppy flowers) and scenes from Ukraine. Similar helmets are now on display in various museums in the United States of America and Canada.

25-pound Gingerbread Replica of St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral (Kyiv, Ukraine)
The seat of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church opened its doors to Euromaidan students seeking a safe shelter from special police forces (Berkut) that violently dispersed their peaceful gathering at Maidan on the order of the corrupted Yanukovych’s regime on November 29-30, 2013. Later on, the Cathedral’s premises became one of Maidan protest camp: a place to warm up at night and keep food supplies, provide medical first aid and even emergency operating room during the mass shootings of protesters. Cathedral’s bell served as alarm signal for Kyiv’s residents during regime’s assaults against Maidan (first time since Tataro-Mongol invasion of Kyiv in 1240).
The replica is kindly provided to the Embassy by Velida Kent. It is eatable except the lights. It took 3 weeks to make it.

A Symbol of the Capital of Ukraine Kyiv – Archangel Michael – decorated with real amber
Archangel Michael with a burning sword has always been considered as a heavenly defender of Kyiv (the capital of Ukraine). No wonder that his image was officially adopted as the symbol of the city in 16th century and re-adopted in 1995, after the collapse of the Soviet rule.
One of the main Kyiv’s cathedrals is named after Michael: the Golden-Domed Cathedral that became protesters’ shelter and hospital during the Revolution of Dignity. There are two statues of the Archangel Michael on the public protest site of November 2013 - February 2014. One is by the entrance to the Main Postal Office (marks the symbolic center of the city). The other one is located on the top of the replica of the gates that are now decorating Maidan, but in the times of Kyivan Rus served as one of the entrances to the city.
