Political issues between Ukraine and Antigua and Barbuda
The Protocol on establishing diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Antigua and Barbuda, signed on March 17, 1993, is the basis for the development of cooperation between the two nations. Currently bilateral relations between the countries can be characterized as developing.
Primary attention is paid to elaborating the legal framework. In particular, countries are considering the possibility of initiating a number of international agreements in the spheres of economic cooperation, tourism and shipping.
The development of political dialogue with Antigua and Barbuda is also seen as a priority. The Embassy of Ukraine maintains contacts with Deborah Mae Lovell, the Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the US who is also accredited as Permanent Representative of the country at the Organization of American States (OAS). The dialogue mainly focuses on collaboration within the United Nations and other international organizations.
Examples of effective interaction between the two countries are the Antiguan support of Ukraine during elections to the UN Human Rights Council (May 21, 2008), as well as Ukraine’s support of the initiatives of Small Island Caribbean States, particularly on climate change.
