Overlooking the Potomac River, the Forrest–Marbury House, located at 3350 M Street NW in Georgetown, Washington, DC, is one of the city’s oldest and historically significant buildings. Constructed between 1788 and 1790 in the Federal style, it stands near the present-day Francis Scott Key Bridge and forms part of the historic setting associated with Francis Scott Key Memorial Park.

The house is connected to three defining chapters of American history: the founding of Washington, DC, the creation of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and the landmark Supreme Court case Marbury v. Madison.

It was a home of Uriah Forrest, who served under and was closely connected to George Washington; on March 29, 1791, he hosted Washington and local landowners for a decisive dinner where they agreed to transfer land for the new federal district—an essential step in establishing the U.S. capital.

With the selection of the nation's capital, development along the Potomac started to expand. Georgetown University was founded in 1789, followed by the start of construction of the White House in 1792 and the United States Capitol in 1793.

In 1997, the George Washington Memorial Room was inaugurated at the Embassy of Ukraine. The room holds a replica of the key to the Bastille—a symbol of freedom and revolution. After the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, during the French Revolution, Marquis de Lafayette presented one of the original keys to his close friend George Washington; it is now displayed at Washington’s estate in Mount Vernon, VA.

In 1800, the house was purchased by William Marbury. Shortly after moving in, Marbury became involved in Marbury v. Madison (1803), a landmark Supreme Court case that established the principle of judicial review, affirming the Court’s authority to determine the constitutionality of laws. This decision remains a cornerstone of American constitutional law.

The surrounding area is also tied to Francis Scott Key, who wrote the poem in 1814 that later became the United States’ national anthem in 1931. Nearby Francis Scott Key Memorial Park commemorates this legacy. Key and his family lived in a house near the present-day memorial from around 1805 to 1830. The house was later used for commercial purposes and was ultimately dismantled in 1947 during construction of the Whitehurst Freeway.

Over time, the house underwent modifications, including the addition of a third story, and was carefully restored in 1988 to mark the bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution, Washington’s inauguration, and the founding of the capital.

Since 1992, the Forrest–Marbury House has served as the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States. Its acquisition was made possible with the support of the Ukrainian-American community.
