As part of the commemoration of the 28th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, the staff of the Embassy of Ukraine in Washington, DC met with representatives of non-governmental charity organization Friends of Chernobyl Centers United States.
They discussed the causes and consequences, measures to combat the Chornobyl aftermath, including the conversion of Chornobyl site into an ecologically safe system and for the construction of a new safe confinement (arch) on the object "Shelter".
In his remarks, Ambassador of Ukraine to the U.S. Olexander Motsyk underlined hat along with technical and financial difficulties, which Ukraine overcoming in the context of solving the post-Chornobyl problems, an important consideration should be given to promoting economic development in the resettlement areas, where the people affected by the Chornobyl disaster are living now, ensure medical treatment and welfare of the victims of Chornobyl.
Also, they discussed the efforts taken by the Government of Ukraine in these difficult times to assist liquidators and victims of the Chornobyl disaster.
In commemoration of those who passed away and being injured as a result of the Chornobyl accident Ukrainian churches near Washington, DC held a solemn memorial service.
