Incidents that can be indicators of Russian involvement into arms supplies to militants in the east of Ukraine and assistance in their illegal crossing of the state border

On May 15, 2014, near the town of Izvaryno, Luhansk region, evading border and customs controls, unidentified armed individuals, moved from the territory of Russian Federation on three vehicles, crossed the state border of Ukraine and headed for Luhansk. According to available data, vehicles were loaded with boxes full of ammunition.

On May 22, 2014, at 12.10 a.m. near the border section controlled by Krasnodon guard post, Luhansk border guards prevented an attempt of two covered KAMAZ  trucks to illegally break across the Ukrainian border from Russia. After border patrol made warning shots into the air, the trucks turned and drove away in the opposite direction. Close to the village of Kuznetsovo-Mykhailivka (Telmanskyi district, Donetsk region) a Russian helicopter and air drone flying along the state border line over the Russian territory were noticed. While in the air, the drone several times crossed the border line with Ukraine.

On May 23, 2014, at 1.00 a.m. at the state border section near the village of Panchenko, Sverdlovsk district, Luhansk region, Ukrainian border guards prevented an attempt of four KAMAZ trucks carrying militants and weapons from Russia to illegally break into Ukraine.

On May 24, 2014, at 4.35 a.m. near the village of Dubrovka (Shakhtarsk district, Donetsk region) at the state border section controlled by Dmytrivka guard post, having bypassed a check point, five KAMAZ trucks and one UAZ without insignia broke into the territory of Ukraine from Russia.  Later on they were detected in the town of Snizhne heading for Torez (at 6.00 a.m. 3 KAMAZes with armed Caucasian-looking individuals entered Torez).

On May 25, 2014, Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) special operation in Berdiansk district of Zaporizhia region resulted in the seizure of small arms and ammunition destined for the terrorists (88 AKs, 5 RPK machine-guns, 24 RPGs, 918 RGD grenades, 20880 rounds) delivered by sea from the occupied Crimean territory (Sevastopol). Following the operation, three felons were detained after resisting the arrest, including a criminal Denys KUZMENKO, brother of the self-proclaimed mayor of Mariupol. The criminals intended to use the seized weapons during premeditated terrorist attacks, including takeovers of the Berdiansk and Mykolaiv sea ports and administrative buildings on the Presidential elections day.

On May 27, 2014, at 4:43 a.m. after a heavy fight, a convoy of 6 KAMAZ trucks and 6 passenger cars loaded with armed men broke through the state border of Ukraine in Novoborovytsi village (Sverdlovsk district, Luhansk region). The clash resulted in seizure of 3 passenger vehicles with militants by border guards. Mi-24 helicopter of the Russian Armed Forces violated Ukrainian air space nearby Kalanchak (Kherson region), where it flew over the Ukrainian border post and returned to Crimea.

On May 30, 2014, within a special operation, the SSU jointly with the ATO forces and the State Border Service of Ukraine prevented unauthorized delivery of weapons from the Russian Federation to terrorists acting in Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine. This resulted in seizure of 43 pcs of weapons (27 AKs, 4 PK machine guns, 5 Dragunov sniper rifles, 5 RPGs, 2 Makarov pistols, 197 hand grenades (102 F-1, 95 RGD grenades), 74 boxes of rounds (caliber 7,62 mm – 22 boxes, caliber 12,7 mm – 40 boxes, caliber 5,45 mm – 12 boxes + 5 packs), 36 AK-74 magazines, 9 Dragunov sniper rifle magazines, 2 anti-aircraft calibrated sights), 1 flash bang grenade and 2 PK machine gun boresighting tubes. Attempts to create a channel for financing terrorist organizations in Donetsk and Luhansk regions were prevented.

According to available data, an illegal “corridor” to the territory of Ukraine is established near Matveyev-Kurgan (Russian city close to Donetsk region border). Militant groups are sent across the border once in 3-4 days.

On June 1-2, 2014, the number of military personnel and equipment deployed near Arbatska strilka right outside Strichkove village (Genichesk district) after the planned rotation on the Russian checkpoint №6 was established. In particular, at the RF armed forces position arrived approximately 120 militaries, 5 АРС-80, 6 BMD-2 (airborne assault vehicles) as well as 2 speed boats with water-jet propulsion, which brought additional 20 special squad soldiers armed with VSS Vintorez (special suppressed sniper rifle that uses a 9mm caliber cartridge) and large-caliber sniper rifles that use 12,7mm caliber cartridge.

On June 5, 2014, near the village of Diakove (Antratsyt district, Luhansk region) a convoy of 10 KAMAZ trucks with Caucasian-looking militants crossed the Ukrainian-Russian border. The column was heading for Dmytrivka village (Donetsk region). Later, at this very border section nearly 100 Cossacks infiltrated through the state border of Ukraine; they are now staying in the village  of Zhovtneve (Antratsyt district).

On June 5, 2014, a group of heavily armed and fully armored “Don Cossacks” (about 60 persons) captured a guard post Dmytrivka.

Moreover, on June 6, 2014, about 40 civilians from the temporarily occupied Crimean territory were brought to the dispositions of the Russian troops. Later they were ranked, equipped and armed. At the moment, mentioned individuals are based in an isolated tent camp next to the boarding house «Valok» (19 km from Strilkove village) and are undergoing accelerated combat training. Numerous KAMAZ trucks are concentrated next to the camp; there is also a layover for MI-38 Russian military transport helicopters.
