President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko had a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden.
Following the meeting, the Head of State informed that a wide range of issues had been discussed, particularly in the sphere of security and defense, energy, financial support and assistance in the implementation of reforms. The President considers the negotiations very fruitful and expressed gratitude for that to Joseph Biden. Petro Poroshenko called the U.S. Vice President "a good friend of Ukraine". "Assistance and coordination from the United States is symbolic in these times," Petro Poroshenko said.
Speaking of the security and defense issues, the President informed that the parties had reached full consent "that the most appropriate format for ensuring the peace process is the format of trilateral contact group, which should ensure the fulfillment of the key elements of the peace plan: immediate ceasefire, creation of the buffer zone, immediate pullback to the delimitation line, border closure, withdrawal of foreign military troops and heavy armament, immediate start of the political process through the holding of local elections under the Ukrainian legislation in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions".
"We need the peace process more than ever. Ukraine strictly adheres to all the obligations undertaken during the signature of the Minsk protocol and the Minsk memorandum. We share common opinion that it is the basic format that is to be fulfilled by all the parties. We will do everything possible to ensure that," the Head of State noted.
The President expressed gratitude to the United States for continuing cooperation in defense sphere.
The Ukrainian President and the U.S. Vice President have discussed a wide range of issues regarding the cooperation in energy sphere: from atomic energy to crisis coordination, in case gas supply will be called into question. Petro Poroshenko noted that the documents signed in Brussels had become a significant contribution to the energy security of Europe and Ukraine. "Energy security of Europe and Ukraine is ensured for today," the President emphasized.
The Head of State informed that the interlocutors had also discussed cooperation in the implementation of reforms. It has been agreed that the USA and the European partners will provide consultative and financial assistance in the implementation of reforms in Ukraine. "This is what Ukraine needs today," the President said.
Also, Petro Poroshenko and Joseph Biden have discussed the issues of financial support that will be coordinated jointly with the IMF. "We expect these processes to be finished right after the formation of the coalition Government," the President noted.
In his turn, the U.S. Vice President congratulated Ukrainians on successful parliamentary elections that had been recognized by the international community as fair and free. "You, the people of Ukraine, are amazing and brave. You've demonstrated that to the entire world. Due to your courage and sacrifice, Ukraine has received a chance to fundamentally change its history for the better," Joseph Biden noted. He urged Ukrainians to use this chance and build a democracy for the successful development of the country.
The U.S. Vice President informed that he had discussed the threats to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity with President Poroshenko. "It is inadmissible in the XXI century that a country tries to forcefully amend the borders, intervenes in a military way, because it doesn't like the decisions made by the neighboring country," Joseph Biden emphasized adding that the international community supported Ukraine.
"America doesn't recognize and will not recognize Russian occupation and annexation of the Crimea," he emphasized.
Having noted the necessity of rapid reforms inside the country, the U.S. Vice President urged to immediately form the new Cabinet of Ministers. "It is necessary to establish powerful democratic institutions, accountable government, ensure integration with Europe, economic development and eliminate corruption that exists in Ukraine," he said.
The Vice President assures that the United States will comprehensively assist Ukraine if it continues on its proclaimed course.
Addressing the President, the U.S. Vice President said: "I can guarantee that until you, Mr. President, and your colleagues believe in your commitments on the creation of democratic and prosperous society, you will not be alone. The United States will be your partner and friend".
