His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, commenced his visit to the U.S. by leading the Divine Liturgy at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family in Washington, D.C.
Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, along with Archbishop Timothy Broglio, Head of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop Emeritus of Washington, and Bishop Borys
Gudziak, joined in the concelebration. Together, we prayed for a just and lasting peace and for Ukraine’s victory in the existential battle for freedom.
During their visit, His Beatitude and the members of the Permanent Synod will engage in discussions with Congress and the Administration concerning the ongoing war in Ukraine and persecution of Christians in regions occupied by Russian forces.
Additionally, the bishops will journey to Philadelphia and New York for prayers at the Philadelphia Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church, and St. Patrick's Cathedral.
