On June 23, the Organization of American States (OAS) released a statement on behalf of the 22 OAS member countries entitled "Continued Support for an End to Russian Aggression in Ukraine."
The document contains provisions on:
- condemnation of the unprovoked, illegal, and unjustified invasion of Ukraine and ongoing violations of international law;
- devotion to the sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within internationally recognized borders;
- a call to the Russian Federation for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the withdrawal of armed forces and military equipment from Ukraine;
- concern about systematic violations of human rights in Ukraine, including sexual and gender-based violence, war crimes, for which the guilty must be punished;
- the threat due to the Russian invasion to global food and energy security that affects the population of the American countries;
- support for the immediate cessation of Russian aggression and the achievement of a lasting peace through political dialogue, negotiations, mediation, and other peaceful means.
The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala M. Bucaro, who initiated the appeal together with the USA, Canada, and Antigua and Barbuda with the support of the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama , Peru, Paraguay, Suriname, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad, and Tobago and Uruguay.
