On April 26, 2013, the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States commemorated the victims of the Chornobyl disaster, that happened on this day 27 years ago.
The address by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to the Ukrainian people in connection with the Day of the Chornobyl disaster was read out. The attendees were also informed of other events in Ukraine commemorating the anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy.
In his remarks, Ambassador of Ukraine Olexander Motsyk emphasized that even 27 years after the Chornobyl tragedy, Ukraine has still to overcome its consequences. He expressed gratitude to the international donors of the Chornobyl projects, including the United States and the European Union. Ambassador of Ukraine to the U.S. expressed confidence that all efforts to convert the Chornobyl site into an ecologically safe system will be fulfilled efficiently and in a timely manner, including the construction of new safe confinement over the Shelter Facility and social protection of victims and the liquidators of the worst industrial disaster of mankind will be in place.
