On November 17, 2013, Ambassador of Ukraine to the U.S. Olexander Motsyk took part in the commemorative event dedicated to the 80th Anniversary of the Holodomor, organized by the Philadelphia Ukrainian-American Community Committee to Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Famine-Genocide in Ukraine.
The event started at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia with the Famine Dramatization and Testimony of the eyewitnesses of this horrible tragedy presented by students of the Ukrainian Heritage School, members of the Ukrainian American Youth Organization, Ukrainian Scouting Organization PLAST and "Voloshky" Ukrainian Dance Ensemble.
The solemn commemoration continued at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia. In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Olexander Motsyk emphasized: "It’s our sacred duty to do utmost to keep alive the memory about our fellow Ukrainians who died because of the artificial Famine 1932-1933 for present and future generations that will be serving as a warning for the future".
The Solemn Commemorative Concert included performances of the "Prometheus" Ukrainian Male Chorus, "Theory" Chamber Choir and Youth Choir of the Ukrainian Baptist Church. Panakhyda for the Deceased was conducted by the priests of the Ukrainian Catholic, Orthodox and Baptist churches at the end of this solemn event.
The attendees of the commemorative event also had an opportunity to see the Holodomor exhibition, presented by the Embassy of Ukraine in the U.S.
Honoring the 80th Anniversary of the Holodomor, Mayor of Philadelphia Michael Nutter released the Proclamation to announce the week of November 17-24, 2013 as the Ukrainian Famine-Genocide Remembrance week.
