Statement of the Foreign Ministry of Ukraine on uncoordinated visit of Russia’s President Putin to Crimea on May 9, 2014 (anniversary of European Victory Day in WWII)
10 May 2014 22:08

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry expresses a strong protest against a visit of Russia’s President V.Putin on May 9, 2014, which was not coordinated with Ukraine, to Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation.

Ukraine considers this visit as open flouting Ukrainian laws, norms of international law, gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty by Russia, UN Statute and UNGA Resolution “On Territorial Integrity of Ukraine” as well as the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and the Russian Federation of 1997.

This provocation once again proves that Russia deliberately pursues further escalation of tensions in bilateral relations and has no intent to settle Ukraine-Russia problems through diplomatic negotiations.

We demand that the Russian side return to civilized methods of maintaining international relations, hear the calls of the international community and cancel illegal decisions on occupation and annexation of the part of Ukrainian territory.
