On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, a Heads of Space Agencies Summit was held in Washington on November 17, 2010.
Delegation of Ukraine, headed by the Director General of National Space Agency of Ukraine Yuriy Alekseev participated in the Summit actives.
Summit gathered more than a thousand participants, among them - Deputy Secretary of State D.Steinberg, NASA Administrator Ch.Bolden etc.
In recognition of Ukraine's leading role in space exploration, the President of Ukraine 1994-2005 Leonid Kuchma was invited as an honorary guest of the Summit. In his speech, President Leonid Kuchma described the history and prospects of Ukraine's space industry, in particular the role of our country in implementing of the conversion of military space technologies for civilian use. He stressed that Ukraine should take its place in modern programs of space exploration.
For outstanding achievements in the field of missile-vehicles building Leonid Kuchma was awarded the title of honorary member of
the International Academy of Astronautics.
The delegation of Ukraine at the summit held several meetings, including with the heads of national space agencies of Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Chile, Japan, Brazil and the USA. Meetings were also held at the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Energy. The aim of the meetings was to start a new and continue realization of current projects in the sphere of space technology exchange, energy efficiency and fulfillment of the agreements achieved at the first meeting of the Working Group on Science and Technology held few days earlier, in Kyiv.
