Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valeriy Chaly took part in a solemn event at the U.S. Capitol held as part of the Ukrainian Days in the U.S. Congress.
In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador Chaly thanked U.S. Senators and Congressmen for their steadfast support of Ukraine in countering the Russian aggression. He also emphasized the important role of the Ukrainian Diaspora in the U.S. in advocating for Ukraine in their contacts with members of the U.S. Congress in particular. He also called for join efforts aimed at de-occupation of Crimea.
The Ambassador drew attention of the gathering to the approaching 85th anniversary of the man-made Holodomor-genocide of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, praised the decisions of several U.S. state legislatures to recognize this crime of the Soviet totalitarian regime as an act of genocide and expressed a hope that the U.S. Congress would make a similar step in the near future.
The event, organized by the Ukrainian National Information Service of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, was attended by members of the Senate and Congressional Ukrainian Caucuses from both sides of the aisle – Senator Chris Murphy, Rep. Andy Harris, M.D., Representative Marcy Kaptur, and Gerry Connolly, as well as Ukrainian Diaspora leaders and activists. The members of the Congress were presented with Ukrainian Diaspora awards for their proactive support of Ukraine.
