On November 27, 2012, the Embassy of Ukraine to the U.S. held an event to commemorate the 79-th anniversary of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine. The event was attended by Ambassador of Ukraine Oleksandr Motsyk, representatives of Ukrainian American Community, U.S.State Department as well as Embassy’s staff.
The event started with a solemn requiem service performed by V.Rev. Fr.Volodymyr Steliak, pastor of St.Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral.
Ukraine’s Ambassador to the US O.Motsyk informed the audience of Holodomor commemorative events held in Kyiv with the participation of President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych. The Ambassador also read out the Address by the Head of State on the Day of Memory of Ukraine’s Holodomor Victims on the 79-th anniversary of the tragedy.
“Let the memory of that supreme sacrifice made by our ancestors in the Holodomor times provide us with strength and inspiration for joint development of Ukraine as a democratic and prospering European state, that will represent the best and most magnificent memorial dedicated to those who passed away because of violent death in those horrible years”, emphasized the Ambassador of Ukraine.
Mr.Baxter Hunt, Director of Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus Affairs of the U.S. State Department read out a Statement by Press-secretary of the White House on Holodomor.
Also Honorable Bohdan Futey, Judge of the US Court of Federal Claims and
Chairman of the U.S. Committee for Ukrainian Holodomor-Genocide Awareness 1932-1933 Michael Sawkiw Jr. addressed the audience.
The participants of the commemorative event-requiem lit candles of remembrance and honored the memory of Holodomor Victims by observing a minute of silence.
