An importatnt expert discussion on creating a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression took part in @USIP today. Such a tribunal would apply the definition of aggression that was established through the Rome Statute to hold Russian officials accountable for the war against Ukraine.
Some crucial remarks from the event.
Speaking on behalf of Ukrainian President @AndriyYermak says: "Peace is impossible without justice. Justice is impossible without due process of law... The
crime of aggression is the alpha and omega of this war."
Ambassador Markarova "Special tribunal will complement other justice efforts. Even after Ukraine wins, for peace to be lasting and true, justice must be served and all Russians responsible for these crimes must be held accountable. We need this tribunal for Ukraine, but also for the world”.
Anton Korynevych, ambassador-at-large for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine "The idea for a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression was born both in Kyiv but also on the international side. Without this Special Tribunal, there is a chance that the people who drove this war will be able to live with impunity".
Ukrainian MP Lesia Zaburanna "This topic is crucially important for Ukraine, but not only for Ukraine -- also for all other democratic countries in the world" .
Congressman Bill Keating "The bipartisan Congress stands with you, the U.S. stands with you, and together, the international community at large continues to support you and your country's fight for freedom."
U.S. Representative Joe Wilson "This war is unlike any other war ever in history -- it is a cell phone war. . Cell phones can help document important details of atrocities committed in Ukraine. It's an opportunity to bring justice."
Congratulation to @USIP and the Atlantic Council for a great event.
