S.Hulak-Artemovsky was a Ukrainian opera composer, singer, great actor and author of the first Ukrainian opera “Zaporozhets za Dunayem” that became a part of a golden fund of the national musical heritage. This opera is a remarkable achievement of the composer, which embodies national peculiarities of Ukrainian folklore and life.

This year Ukraine celebrates 150^th anniversary of the premier of “Zaporozhets za Dunayem”. In 1939, a movie based on this story was done in the U.S.

A brief story on S.Hulak-Artemovsky was followed by a concert wherein Ukrainian musicians performed unforgettable pieces of the authentic folk music and overture from the comic opera.
